Slovakia
The strongest passport of the Visegrad four, with no inheritance, gift or wealth tax. But the business route is now capped at 700 slots a year nationally. There is no investor programme, and new 30% and 35% tax brackets arrive from 2026.
Frequently asked
How far back does Slovak citizenship by descent reach?
This route reaches back to the great-grandparent, one generation deeper than Czechia's grandparent limit. Since the amendment effective 1 April 2022, a parent, grandparent or great-grandparent who was a Czechoslovak citizen born in the territory of the present-day Slovak Republic can found a claim. Note the double condition. The ancestor must have held Czechoslovak citizenship and have been born on present-day Slovak territory, so a Czechoslovak citizen born in Bohemia or Moravia does not qualify. The amendment also removed the old Slovak Living Abroad certificate precondition, and it does not impose the standard language test on this route.
I qualify for both Slovak and Czech citizenship. Which one should I take first?
Decide the order before you file anything. Czechia's section 31(3) declaration route expressly bars Slovak citizens. That means taking Slovak citizenship first permanently forecloses the faster, cleaner Czech declaration route. Czechia also excludes ancestors who became Slovak citizens after 1969. If both routes are open to you, secure the Czech declaration first. There is a further practical friction on the Slovak side. It requires a Slovak residence permit, which the Czech consular route does not.
What is the 700-slot quota on the Slovak business route?
Since 1 July 2025, the business-residence route has been capped at a national quota of 700 applicants a year across all Slovak embassies and consulates combined. Per-post allocations range from just 1 to 190 slots. Applications are accepted only at consulates abroad, not inside Slovakia. A business plan is now mandatory, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs weighs in on whether the activity benefits the Slovak economy. Post selection has become a real strategic variable, and the quota can simply run out. Most advisory material has not caught up with this.
Does Slovakia have a golden visa?
No. Slovakia has no formal investor or golden visa programme, and specialist surveys of every open European golden visa leave it out entirely. Commercial sites market one anyway. One even brands it a secret golden visa, citing a EUR 200,000 threshold, a 30-day timeline, and a Ministry of Finance recommendation mechanism that appears in no Slovak government source. If a client arrives with this proposal, the honest answer is that there is no evidence the route exists. The separately cited figure of EUR 100m plus 300 jobs relates to the Investment Aid Act, an industrial-subsidy regime, not immigration.
If I naturalise abroad, will I lose my Slovak citizenship?
You can keep it, but only if you file in time. From 17 July 2010 Slovakia automatically stripped citizenship from anyone who acquired a foreign citizenship by an act of will. The 2022 amendment softened this rule, but it did not repeal it. Retention is now permitted if the foreign citizenship comes through marriage, birth, adoption, or after living in that country for at least five years. Even then, it is conditional. You must notify the Slovak authorities within 90 days. That 90-day window is a real trap. Diarise it the moment a foreign naturalisation is even under consideration, because acquiring citizenship outside these permitted grounds still triggers loss of the Slovak passport.
How much money do I need for the Slovak business residence permit?
For the figures valid 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026, a self-employed applicant must show EUR 9,092.16 in total, made up of EUR 3,409.56 in a personal account and EUR 5,682.60 in a business account, both held in the applicant's own name. An executive officer of an s.r.o. must show EUR 31,822.56, which is the same personal amount plus EUR 28,413 in a business account. These thresholds are revised annually, so verify before you budget. You will also need one of the 700 annual quota slots and a mandatory business plan. Once granted, the permit runs three years.
Does Slovakia tax worldwide income, and what changed for 2026?
Slovakia taxes residents on worldwide income. From 1 January 2026, it added new higher brackets: four bands running 19%, 25%, 30% and 35%, with the top rate kicking in at 264x the subsistence minimum. The euro values of the 2026 thresholds are not yet verified. Capital gains are taxed at 19% as a separate base, and dividends at 7% keyed to the profit year. There is an exit tax and CFC rules, the anti-avoidance rules that apply to foreign companies you control. On the upside, Slovakia has no inheritance, estate or gift tax at all, and no wealth tax.
Is the Slovak passport strong?
Yes. It is the strongest passport of the Visegrad four, with roughly 184 visa-free destinations on the 2026 Henley index. Slovakia also allows dual citizenship. It has been in the eurozone since 2009 and in Schengen since 2007, so there is no currency risk and no internal border friction. That combination is a large part of why the descent route is worth pursuing where a qualifying ancestor exists.
