Argentina
A top-tier passport reachable in two years, paired with a first-world quality of life at emerging-market prices. All of it wrapped around the most legally unstable immigration framework in the hemisphere.
Frequently asked
Can I really get an Argentine passport in two years?
Nominally, yes. Ley 346 of 1869 requires only two years of residence, with no investment, no language exam and no renunciation, for a passport with around 169 visa-free destinations (Henley 2026 rank 16). But here you are underwriting legal risk, not paying money. DNU 366/2025 tried to tighten the rules. On 30 June 2026 the Cámara Nacional Electoral declared the transfer of citizenship jurisdiction to Migraciones absolutely null and returned it to the federal electoral courts. The government is expected to appeal to the Corte Suprema. Anyone filing in 2026 is filing into an unresolved conflict.
Is the Argentine citizenship by investment programme for USD 500,000 real?
No. It was created in principle by DNU 366/2025 and regulated by Decreto 524/2025, but the Ministry of Economy never defined what counted as a relevant investment. The USD 500,000 figure only ever appeared in press briefings. Treat it as journalism, not law. The international tender to design the programme was cancelled outright on 14 April 2026 by RESOL-2026-522-APN-MEC, and the enabling citizenship provisions were voided by the Cámara Nacional Electoral on 30 June 2026. No citizenship has ever been granted under this route. Anyone quoting you a price for it is selling a product that does not exist. Do not pay a retainer against it.
Do I have to give up my current citizenship to naturalise in Argentina?
No. Argentina permits dual citizenship, so you keep your existing nationality. The more unusual point runs the other way. Argentine nationality is effectively irrevocable and cannot be renounced. For a family with US exposure or future citizenship plans elsewhere, that permanence is a feature to weigh carefully rather than ignore, since you cannot later hand the citizenship back.
Does having a baby in Buenos Aires help with citizenship?
Yes, and it is widely used. A child born in Argentina is Argentine by birth, regardless of the parents' immigration status. The parents of an Argentine-born child then have a strong and fast independent claim to naturalise. That said, Argentina has begun scrutinising birth tourism. You should not assume the current permissiveness is permanent. Where it applies, it remains the strongest and quickest route available.
Does Argentina tax worldwide income and assets?
Yes to both, and this is the central planning problem. Argentina taxes worldwide income at up to 35% and levies Bienes Personales, a wealth tax on residents' worldwide assets. Rates were cut under the 2024 reform, and a prepayment regime (REIBP) was offered, but the wealth tax still exists. The usual approach is to naturalise and then break tax residency, which takes care and proper documentation. Getting the passport while genuinely tax-resident there is expensive.
How many days do I actually have to spend in Argentina?
The residence requirement is contested. Ley 346, as applied by the courts, required residence but tolerated absences. DNU 366/2025, by contrast, demanded two years with no departures at all. With the decree's citizenship provisions nullified in June 2026, the pre-2025 judicial standard is currently operative. This is exactly the kind of question the Supreme Court may revisit. Separately, the decree's residency rules, including cancellation of temporary residency after six months' absence, were not struck down and appear to remain in force. A family that files and then leaves is at real risk.
What is the income requirement for the Rentista visa?
The Rentista requires passive income of at least five times the Salario Mínimo Vital y Móvil per month. With the SMVM around ARS 363,000 in mid-2026, that works out to roughly ARS 1.8 million a month. But because the figure is tied to a multiple of the minimum wage, its dollar equivalent moves constantly. It can drift below the line as wage policy changes. The income must be genuinely passive, from rent, dividends or interest, not earnings from work. That rules out consultants and remote employees. The binding constraint is that the funds must actually enter Argentina through a BCRA-authorised institution.
Is the Argentine investor visa really that cheap?
In cash terms, yes. Inflation has quietly turned it into arguably the cheapest investor visa on earth. The headline ARS 1,500,000 threshold was set when it meant real money and is now worth roughly a thousand dollars. But because the number no longer filters anyone, the real test has become discretionary scrutiny of your project by Migraciones and the Ministry of Production. Treat it as a business-plan visa, not an investment visa. Whether the threshold has been updated for 2026 is unconfirmed, so check directly with Migraciones.
Tax position
- Income tax (top)
- 35%
- Capital gains
- 15% on foreign securities and most disposals. 5% on peso-denominated instruments without an inflation adjustment clause.
- Wealth tax
- Yes. Bienes Personales is levied on residents' worldwide assets. Rates have been cut under the 2024 reform, and a prepayment regime, REIBP, was offered. But the tax still exists, and it remains the central planning problem.
- Inheritance tax
- None federally. The Province of Buenos Aires levies its own transmisión gratuita de bienes.
- Special regime
- None for individuals. RIGI, the Régimen de Incentivo para Grandes Inversiones under Ley 27.742 of 2024, offers a 30-year stability guarantee for qualifying large projects. But it is a corporate regime, not a personal tax deal.
