Retirement Residency (VITEM XIV)

Open Last verified July 2026

The USD 2,000/month benchmark is administrative practice, not a hard indexed statutory figure. Consulates apply it with some variation.

At USD 2,000/month, this is one of the least demanding retirement visas attached to a genuinely strong passport. Unlike Panama's Pensionado, Brazil looks at the stability of retirement-sourced income rather than insisting on a lifetime government pension. That makes it reachable for more people. But Brazilian tax residency follows, and that is the expensive part.

What can go wrong
  • Practitioners consistently advise showing USD 2,500–3,000/month rather than the bare USD 2,000, because the threshold is applied with discretion and is not inflation-indexed.
  • Funds must be demonstrably transferable into a Brazilian account. The visa expects you to actually remit your pension.
  • Brazilian tax residency brings your worldwide income into scope. Many pensions that are tax-favoured at home are not in Brazil. Check the treaty position before you move. Brazil's treaty network is decent but has notable gaps, and there is no US-Brazil income tax treaty.
  • The IRPFM minimum tax from 2026 applies above BRL 600,000 of annual income and will catch wealthier retirees.
  • The USD 2,000 figure is administrative practice, not a hard statutory number. Confirm it with the specific consulate.
