Denmark

This is one of Europe's best expatriate tax regimes, a 32.84% flat rate for seven years, with the entry threshold cut in 2026. It sits alongside one of the continent's harshest citizenship regimes, where a nine-year wait ends in an act of parliament.

Frequently asked

What is the Danish researcher tax scheme, and how much does it save?

The researcher scheme (forskerordningen) taxes covered salary at a flat 32.84%, made up of 27% A-tax plus an 8% labour-market contribution. This applies for 84 months, or seven years, against a normal marginal rate of 52-56%. On DKK 2m a year, that comes to roughly DKK 400,000 in annual savings. For 2026, the entry threshold actually fell, to a minimum monthly salary of DKK 65,400 after ATP, down from DKK 78,000 in 2025. That widens eligibility just as most of Europe is tightening its own rules. Approved PhD-level researchers face no salary minimum at all. Keep in mind there are zero deductions on covered income, so the 32.84% is not as cheap as it looks next to a Dane's effective rate after deductions.

Can I use the Danish researcher scheme more than once?

No. This is a once-in-a-lifetime benefit, and you must not have been liable to Danish tax in the previous ten years to qualify. The 84 months are a lifetime maximum. You can split them across employers and periods, but the clock never resets, so using it up on a short assignment means losing it for good. Sequence it deliberately and use it at the right moment, or not at all. Both employee and employer must notify SKAT if the conditions lapse. Otherwise you risk assessment errors and forfeiture of whatever benefit remains.

How can I move to Denmark for work if my occupation is not on a shortage list?

The Pay Limit Scheme (Beloebsordningen) is Denmark's route around the shortage list. Clear the salary bar, in any occupation, industry or employer, and you are in. There is no labour-market test. For 2026, the thresholds rose sharply from 1 January to DKK 552,000 for the ordinary scheme and DKK 446,000 for the supplementary scheme. Figures around DKK 514,000 and DKK 415,000 belong to 2025. The supplementary scheme ties you to a specific position, so changing roles, freelancing or taking a second job requires a separate permit. Paired with the researcher scheme, a senior hire can be taxed at 32.84% for seven years.

Is there a start-up route into Denmark?

Yes, Start-up Denmark. It requires no fixed investment. The business idea must be approved by the Danish Business Authority's expert panel before you apply for the SIRI residence permit. But this is a boutique programme, not a pipeline. There is a hard quota of 75 permits per calendar year across the whole scheme, so timing within the year matters, and a rejection is not a reflection on your file. In practice, the panel excludes lifestyle businesses. Shops, restaurants, consultancies and import/export do not qualify. You also need to play an active part in the company, with your presence in Denmark genuinely necessary to the business.

How long does Danish citizenship take, and why is it so slow?

It requires nine years of continuous residence, among the strictest thresholds in Europe. Citizenship is then granted not by an administrative agency but by an act of the Folketing, and the Naturalisation Committee processes only two bills a year. So even a flawless application has to wait for the next legislative slot. That is why realistic timelines run from arrival to passport well beyond the nine-year residence period. Denmark has permitted dual citizenship only since 1 September 2015, a relatively recent change. This parliamentary quirk is real, and it needs to be built into any plan.

Is there a handshake requirement for Danish citizenship?

Yes, and it is a genuine legal condition, not a formality. Naturalisation requires attendance at a mandatory in-person ceremony in your municipality. You sign a loyalty declaration and shake hands with the presiding official. Refusing to do so on religious or cultural grounds ends the application. You must also pass Proeve i Dansk 3, a B2-level Danish exam covering all four skills, and the Indfoedsretsproeven citizenship test, which requires at least 32 of 40 correct, or 80%. These are serious undertakings on top of the nine-year residence requirement.

Does Denmark have a wealth or inheritance tax?

There is no wealth tax. Inheritance tax is comparatively mild, at 15% for direct descendants and 0% for spouses. Share income is taxed on a two-tier scale, 27% up to DKK 79,400 and 42% above that, with the thresholds doubled for married couples living together at year-end. Reports of a 2026 reduction to a flat 42% are circulating, but they are wrong. For a wealthy family, Denmark's treatment of capital is relatively benign. The real burden falls on high earned income.

What is the new Danish top-top tax?

The Folketing adopted the top-top tax on 16 May 2024. It takes effect from the 2026 income year and adds an extra 5 percentage points on personal income above DKK 2,592,700, on top of the existing brackets and municipal tax. Some secondary sources cite DKK 2,588,300, but SKAT's own figure is DKK 2,592,700, so use that one. Denmark raised taxes on very high earners in exactly the year it made its expatriate regime more generous. That is a deliberate split between the people it wants to import and those already there. The researcher scheme's flat rate of 32.84% insulates qualifying expatriates from all of this for seven years. That makes sequencing that once-in-a-lifetime election even more valuable.
