Identifiers
LEI, ISIN & CFI codes
Under EU and UK reporting rules, the position is blunt. No LEI, no trade. An entity that transacts in reportable financial instruments must hold a Legal Entity Identifier (ISO 17442) before a bank or broker will report on its behalf, and a vehicle that issues securities also needs an ISIN (ISO 6166) and a CFI classification (ISO 10962) from its national numbering agency. We prepare and lodge the applications, chase the codes and keep the LEI renewed. We are not ourselves an issuing authority.
What this covers
- Obtain your LEI through a GLEIF-accredited LEI Issuer (Local Operating Unit) or Registration Agent. It is typically issued within roughly 24-48 hours once documents are verified.
- Handle the annual LEI renewal so the code never lapses. A lapsed LEI cannot be used for new trade reports under MiFIR and EMIR.
- Establish whether your structure actually needs an LEI, an ISIN, or both. Many families acquire identifiers they do not require.
- Apply for an ISIN (ISO 6166) for a company or fund issuing shares, bonds or units, through the National Numbering Agency of the country of issue.
- We secure the companion CFI (ISO 10962) and FISN (ISO 18774). The same numbering agency assigns both alongside the ISIN.
- We reconcile identifiers across your custodian, administrator and reporting counterparties. That way, a single entity is never recorded under conflicting codes.
- We keep the reference data behind the LEI accurate at each renewal. That is the legal name, the registered address and the ownership details, and it is the whole purpose of the annual cycle.
Scope & conditions
- LEI standard & format
- ISO 17442 — a 20-character alphanumeric code; the underlying data is a public good, free to search at gleif.org.
- LEI issuance & cost
- Via a GLEIF-accredited LEI Issuer or Registration Agent; typical issuer fee roughly USD 50-75 per year (as of 2026, confirm — varies by provider and multi-year term), code issued in ~24-48h.
- LEI renewal
- Annual. The code persists if it lapses but is flagged, and a lapsed LEI cannot support new EU/UK trade reporting.
- ISIN standard & format
- ISO 6166 — 12 characters: a two-letter country code, a nine-character number and a single check digit.
- ISIN / CFI issuer
- The National Numbering Agency appointed by the national regulator issues the ISIN; ANNA is the ISO registration authority for the standard.
- ISIN / CFI cost
- Most NNAs do not charge for ISIN allocation and levy no maintenance or renewal fee; where a fee applies it is cost-recovery only (confirm per jurisdiction).
- CFI & FISN
- CFI (ISO 10962) and FISN (ISO 18774) are assigned by the same numbering agency concurrently with the ISIN — the practice since 1 July 2017.
How it works
- An LEI is required before any legal entity, whether a company, fund, trust or foundation, can trade in financial instruments that a counterparty must report under MiFIR or EMIR.
- In practice, no LEI means no trade. A broker or bank will not open or report a securities account for an entity that lacks a live LEI.
- An ISIN is required whenever a vehicle issues a security, whether equity, bond or fund unit, that will be settled, held or listed through market infrastructure.
- A CFI accompanies every ISIN as its ISO-standard classification. The same numbering agency allocates it, so there is no separate application.
- Individuals trading in their own name generally do not need an LEI. The requirement attaches to legal entities, not to natural persons.
- We are not an LEI Issuer or a National Numbering Agency. We prepare and lodge applications through accredited bodies. We cannot mint a code ourselves.
- The per-year LEI figures here are third-party issuer fees as of 2026. They move with the provider and the length of the term. Confirm the current price before relying on it.
- Numbering-agency fees differ by country. The claim that most NNAs do not charge is the general position. It is not a guarantee for your particular country of issue.
- Renewal, not registration, is the real risk. An LEI that lapses silently will stop your reporting counterparty from filing. That is usually when the problem first surfaces.
- We do not give investment advice or decide what your entity should issue. Identifiers follow the structure. They do not design it.
Frequently asked
Do I need an LEI to trade shares?
If you trade in your own personal name, generally no. The requirement falls on legal entities. A company, fund, trust or foundation trading in reportable financial instruments does need one. Under MiFIR and EMIR, the counterparty cannot report the trade without your LEI. This is the no LEI, no trade rule.
How much does an LEI cost and how quickly is it issued?
Fees are set by the LEI Issuer, not by us. They typically run around USD 50-75 per year as of 2026, with multi-year terms cheaper per year. A code is usually issued within roughly 24-48 hours once documents are verified. Confirm the current fee with the issuer before relying on it.
How often must an LEI be renewed?
Every year. Renewal re-verifies the reference data behind the code, things like legal name, registered address and ownership. A lapsed LEI still exists, but it gets flagged. Under EU and UK rules, it cannot be used for new trade reports until it is renewed.
What is the difference between an LEI and an ISIN?
An LEI identifies the entity, the legal person that trades or issues. An ISIN identifies the security, the specific share, bond or fund unit. A fund issuing units needs both. It gets an LEI for itself and an ISIN for each share class.
Who issues an ISIN, and does it cost anything?
The National Numbering Agency of the country of issue handles it, appointed by the national regulator, with ANNA acting as the umbrella registration authority. Most NNAs do not charge for ISIN allocation and levy no renewal fee. Where a fee does exist, it covers costs only. Confirm the details with the specific NNA.
Do I have to apply for a CFI separately?
No. The CFI (ISO 10962) and the FISN (ISO 18774) are assigned by the same numbering agency alongside the ISIN. They have been issued together since 1 July 2017.
