What can go wrong
- This is a tax trap dressed up as a perk. 365 days of presence with zero immigration status comfortably exceeds the 183-day threshold that makes you an Albanian tax resident on worldwide income, while building no permanent-residence or naturalisation clock whatsoever. Families arrive for the freedom and leave with a filing obligation and nothing accrued.
- The 90-day reset is mandatory. You must be out of Albania for a full 90 days before the year restarts. This is not a border-run regime.
- It is a bilateral arrangement, not a treaty right, and it can be altered.
- US citizens remain subject to US worldwide taxation regardless. Albanian residency adds a second filing obligation rather than replacing the first.
