Uruguay grants a genuine second passport in as little as three years if you are married to a Uruguayan or have a Uruguayan child, or five years if single. That is the shortest stable route in the Southern Cone. The subtlety is legal. What you receive is legal citizenship, not nationality. It comes with a full Uruguayan passport and full rights, but the right to vote begins a further three years after the citizenship letter, and the legal category is occasionally queried at foreign consulates.

What can go wrong
- Legal citizenship is not natural nationality. The passport is full and valid, but the category is distinct, and voting rights start three years after the citizenship letter.
- Marriage to a Uruguayan is not, by itself, a fast track to citizenship. It makes you a member of what the law calls a constituted family, which only cuts the residence requirement from five years to three.
- Until the April 2025 reform, Uruguayan legal-citizen passports noted the holder's country of birth, which caused recognition friction abroad. This is historical background, not the current position.
